Pet Surgery
At Leo’s Pet Care, we understand that it can be frightening to receive the news that pet surgery is being recommended.
What To Know When Your Pet Needs Surgery
It is important to understand that it is a recommendation that our veterinarians do not take lightly. If one of our veterinarians is recommending a surgical procedure, rest assured that it is with the best interests of your pet in mind. It is important to us that you understand the reasons why a surgical procedure is being recommended and are able to comfortably make the right decisions regarding your pet’s health.
Surgical procedures fall into two categories where your pet is concerned, elective procedures and those that are urgently necessary.
The most common pet surgery procedures include:
Spaying- This is always recommended for your female pet to help improve their overall health and well-being. It reduces the risk of mammary cancer by 50% in dogs and 90% in cats, especially if they are spayed before their first heat cycle. It also reduces the incidence of uterine infections and ovarian cancer, which can be serious and life-threatening.
Neutering – Neutering is recommended for all dogs and cats to help reduce running off and being injured, marking in the house, and reducing some instances of aggression. By neutering, you eliminate the risk of testicular cancer and can reduce the incidence of some prostatic issues.
Dentistry – Dental cleanings in your dogs and cats have several benefits! Not only will it help your pet to have a cleaner mouth (for all those kisses), but we can also address issues like broken teeth, infected teeth, reduce gingivitis, and improve their oral health and comfort.
Routine Surgeries- We perform other procedures, such as mass removals, wound repair, bladder stone surgery, foreign body surgery, etc. on an as-needed basis and doctor discretion basis. We want what’s best for your pet and will recommend what we feel is the gold standard of treatment for your four-legged family member.
