What Should I Ask My Veterinarian At My Puppy’s First Appointment?
I’m gonna start off by saying all questions are fair game, and nothing is too silly. So go ahead and bring that list of questions, whether you’re a new pet owner or an owner that’s had pets for some time. Any question is a good question. Some of the common ones are: What food should I feed? What are some symptoms I should look out for in a happy and healthy puppy? How do I introduce my puppy to another pet in the house, whether another dog or a cat? Again, everybody here has expertise and experience that they will be happy to share with you.
How Often Does My Puppy Need To Go To The Veterinarian?
Generally, we will tell you to schedule appointments every three to four weeks as we update the series of vaccines that your pet needs. When you come in for that first visit, we will ask that you bring any previous records from your breeder or shelter. With this, we are scanning through to see what vaccines they have already been given, so we can give you an accurate schedule of what is due in the coming months for your pet. If you ever have any questions on deciphering your past records, jot that down on your list of questions as well. We’ll be going through that and will be happy to answer any questions you have.
When Should I Get My Puppy Spayed Or Neutered?
At Leo’s Pet Care, we recommend spaying and neutering your pet at about six months of age. Generally, this is the age that we aim for. If there are any medical conditions or if your pet is a particular breed that our veterinarian would say, you are a candidate for either getting it done sooner or later; we will let you know in the upcoming months as we get to know your pet’s health and general wellbeing. So even though it’s typically six months, every pet’s different, so we do keep that individualized treatment in mind.

What Are Some Things My Vet Will Be Looking For At My Puppy’s First Appointment?
On this first puppy visit, we are doing a nose-to-tail exam. When you come in, we will get an updated weight and ensure that your pet is in a healthy range and not overweight for a puppy already. If the body score is underweight, we’re going to give recommendations for maybe adding calories or specific foods. The doctor and/or the technicians will be checking your puppies, ears, eyes, teeth, skin, and coat condition and getting a stool sample to check for parasites. If your puppies are coming to us and are already showing signs of being ill, at that time, we might recommend additional testing as needed to make sure that your puppy is healthy and that we can get them the medication they need.
